We are massive fans of the honey bee. They are so massively important to the environment and, sadly, bees are in serious trouble. Their numbers are dwindling.
WHAT IS CAUSING THE BEE DECLINE?
The biggest cause of the bee decline is the increased use of pesticide, however other threats to bees include habitat loss, climate change, pests, disease and invasive species.
DID YOU KNOW?
We have lost 97% of our wildflower meadows since the Second World War.
HOW CAN WE HELP BEES?
There are many ways, but here are a few suggestions to get you started…
BUY LOCAL, RAW HONEY. Yes, raw honey does cost more than supermarket bought honey, but chances are the honey you buy in the supermarket has been pasteurised – meaning all the goodness in the honey has been killed and you might as well be eating sugar syrup. When brewing Nunc, we only use raw local honey (including our own) and we never let the honey we use to get above beehive temperature (35 C), something we do to protect the goodness inside honey.
TELL YOUR MP YOU WANT A COMPLETE AND PERMANENT BAN ON NEONICS IN THE UK. The evidence that neonicotinoid pesticides pose a threat to our bees is overwhelming. In 2018 the EU (including the UK) backed a permanent ban of neonics, this cannot be changed.
PLANT WILDFLOWERS. Plant bee-friendly flowers that are pollinator favourites, and help our bees and butterflies. Ask at your garden centre for flowers that haven’t been pre-treated with neonicotinoids, and avoid using chemicals and pesticides in your garden.
